GET DRIVEN - RIDE A BIKE

Bikes Rock!

Being ‘Green’ has never been so fashionable. Our appetite for eco-products and services has created a whole new market segment - giving us the opportunity to save the planet and alleviate our conscience all in one neat purchase. But can we buy our way out of the problem? Is it OK to offset one bad habit against another? My answer is short. It’s ‘NO’. Sometimes, you have to carbon neutralise your own hot air - stop talking and start peddling. There is a better world waiting for you. One revolution (and party) at a time. Get driven - ride a bike.

Ding Dong the Witch is Dead

squashed like rotten fruitDing-dong the witch is dead, Which old witch? The wicked witch. Ding-dong the wicked witch is dead. Wake up you sleepyhead, rub your eyes, get out of bed. Wake up the wicked witch is dead. She’s gone where the goblins go - below - below - below, yo-ho! Let’s open up and sing and ring the bells out. Ding Dong’ the merry-oh, sing it high, sing it low, let them know the Wicked Witch is dead.As mayor of the Munchkin City, In the county of the land of Oz, I welcome you most regally, But we’ve got to verify it legally, to see… to see…if she… if she…is morally, ethically, spiritually, physically, positively, absolutely, undeniably and reliably dead. As Coroner , I thoroughly examined her and she’s not only merely dead, she’s really most sincerely dead.

Then this is a day of independence for all the munchkins and their descendants, yes, let the joyous news be spread, the wicked old witch at last is dead!

A galaxy of emptiness

See how they shine for you

Something about this time of year really gives me the shits. Maybe it’s the throngs of vacant suburban nobodies click-clacking their way around the city in their post-Flemington, post credit-splurge afterglow. Maybe it’s the pre-emptive noel of tawdry Christmas consumer beacons enticing us to invest in the true spirit of Christmas - shopping. Maybe it’s the fact that Myer shut down their perfectly busy and functional food court to re-open a full square kilometre of food available only in hamper form, a year’s worth of landfill for each redundant staff member. Where am i going to get my nuts now? Luckily, some distractions are in place to keep me from hitting the streets with a megaphone and dressing down anyone in my path. Like the fast approaching Bicycle Film Festival. Future proof your ass. Get on a bike.

A Disobedient Nature

Some plants just can’t be told

For any rule to be made it must have once been broken. That’s why you needed it in the first place, to regulate an out-of-proportion incidence of an occurrence back to its acceptable standard. This what the rule makers call - The Law. When things keep happening despite the presence of laws, I like to think of them as statistical impulses indicating the rule is dumb. Take tram fines for instance. How many people in big coats with sheriff badges does it take to reprimand a citizen for the non-payment of a public service valued $3.20? About 8 is the right answer. And if you complain they call the wallopers. To me this seems an indication of insecurity around the law to begin with - don’t you think? Either that - or Fascism. One way or another it keeps happening. All around the city stomachs are dropping at the sight of a 8 failed Centrelink workers with a uniform allowance. You just can’t stop a disobedient nature. It’s nature. And also we now have a SHOP. And also are looking for VOLUNTEERS.

A Little Bird Told Me…

are you coming or going?

…that there is a show coming to Melbourne in which the performer gives out REAL cash to the audience and tells them they can keep it. The same little bird told me that sometimes these amounts of cash can be in the thousands. The little bird went on to say that the show provides a unique interactive framework for a high-stakes live art comic experiment gambling with text, movement and cold hard cash to send up and surmount problems of gross, net AND self worth. It was at this point that i began to suspect that the bird was in fact a voice in my head. In either case, you should all check out Sara Juli’s The Money Conversation, because little birds always know which way the wind blows.

Collective Nouns

A bundle o horsies

Friday afternoons can really throw up the big questions in life. Like, for instance - What would be the collective noun for an Ambiguous Horse? An annoyance? (some in the studio might say so) An illusion? A confusion? Or maybe a question? Sometimes we can take comfort in the knowledge that there isn’t an answer. Mmm. Yes. How long did that last? So onto matters of actual business. Item 1 - we have announced the winners of the There’s a Hole in my Bucket project. Congratulations and thank-you to everyone that took part. Item 2 - You can now buy tickets for Sara Juli’s The Money Conversation, the one woman show all about money. Never before have you had the opportunity to leave a theatre richer than when you entered. Item 3 - The Bicycle Film Festival has announced it’s program of activities for the first ever Melbourne leg of this truly global affair. If you are into bicycles - you should be getting excited. If you are into cars, your time on this earth is coming to an end. Something to think about next time you’re stuck in traffic…

We like the old stuff better than the new stuff

Flinders St Station, Platform 1

My father told me a story about manufacturing this week. He said that the nuns from the local convent used to take cask-wine containers, cut them in half and cover them with wall paper to sell at the local market as document holders. The simple art of re-cycling driven not by fashion or morality but depression-era necessity. The Mother of invention. Sixty years later, recycling is so hot right now - and we are pleased to announce that Betty Jo Designs have been picked up by global uber-brand Paul Smith. So the lino ripped out of a floor in Thornbury to make way for more modern floor coverings will now be on sale as a designed item in Paris, London and New York. Ain’t the world a funny place? When old is new and new is old, it pays to know where you stand. (Maybe we’ll see you on the platform - thanks to Dad for the image).

Forget About It

in the dark

Memory is a funny thing. Each year we forget just how cold and miserable winter is, thinking only of soup, red wine and the chance to coordinate multiple accessories. Then July rolls around and bites you where it hurts. Some things our minds choose to forget; like how busy the Melbourne Design Market is , or the promise you made yourself not to watch ANY Big Brother this year. Ah well, at least now we can chat about it on our myspace page. That’s right, the horse has entered my space. We recruited some ‘young’ people to help set it up. One of them is my little sister. This is her picture. Isn’t she cute? She’s going to kill me….
