There’s a Hole in my Bucket is a Sydney Design Festival project that asks YOU to make a creative contribution to a public discussion on design. The project is all about bad design – and by talking about bad design, we want to encourage debate about good design – and what that means.

Perhaps one of the most enduring examples of functional design, the humble bucket has enjoyed a resurgence in the public imagination since drought and climate change have encouraged greater conservation of water. 'There's a Hole in my Bucket' introduces the bucket as a symbol for design, as 100 photos (each containing a bright yellow bucket) are uploaded to our online gallery during Sydney Design 08
We have distributed 100 yellow buckets (with a hole) to various locations around Sydney. The first 20 have been given to Sydney-based designers, who have photographed them in settings that they consider badly designed - the proverbial 'hole in the bucket'.
The remaining 80 buckets are now available for you to collect from 8 different locations around the city. We are asking you to use the buckets to have your say about design and the design environment of the city you live in. The photographs can contain anything; the only restriction is that they must contain the bucket. At the conclusion of Sydney Design 08, the images will be judged and prizes awarded at a closing event to celebrate the project.
The project intends to create a public forum for ideas relating to form, sustainability, function and the importance of design in our everyday lives. It hopes to encourage people to think about the design inherent in everything they encounter, and by highlighting what is bad, encourage us all to think about good design, and what that means.
